Where to Stay on the South Coast of Mauritius

The South Coast is the least developed part of the Mauritius shoreline, and accommodation reflects that: a cluster of resorts at Bel Ombre, smaller hotels and guesthouses elsewhere, and long stretches with no accommodation at all.

It suits travellers who want quiet and greenery, with the south-west’s nature within reach.

How the region is laid out

Bel Ombre lies towards the western end of the coast, below the hills of the south-west. Saint Félix and Riambel are further east, and Souillac and the Gris Gris cliffs lie near the eastern end, before the coast continues to the south-east.

Bel Ombre

The south coast’s main resort area, set on a reef-protected beach between the sea and the forested hills of a former sugar estate.

It works if you want a resort stay on a reef-protected beach in a green, quiet setting.

It works less well if you want to walk to independent restaurants; services are concentrated in the hotels.

Read the full Bel Ombre guide.

Saint Félix & Riambel

Quieter beaches between Bel Ombre and Souillac, including the public beach at Saint Félix, with a small number of hotels and guesthouses.

It works if you want a quieter beach stay away from the larger resorts.

It works less well if you want many facilities nearby; this is a quiet stretch.

Souillac & Gris Gris

A small coastal town near the Gris Gris cliffs, where the reef is broken and waves reach the shore, with Rochester Falls inland.

It works if you want a small local town and dramatic coastal scenery.

It works less well if you want a swimming beach; much of this coast is exposed, with no protecting reef.

Do you need a car?

A car is close to essential on the South Coast. Public transport is infrequent, and most sights — Gris Gris, Chamarel, the national park — are a drive away.
