Mahébourg is a small town on the shore of the bay of Grand Port, in the south-east of Mauritius. Founded by the French in the early nineteenth century and named after the governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais, it has a grid of streets running down to a waterfront promenade, a market and a lively local character.
It is the closest town of any size to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport at Plaine Magnien, which makes it a practical first or last stop. Together with the beaches of Pointe d’Esny and Blue Bay just to the south, it forms the island’s airport-side coastal base.

Why visit Mahébourg
Mahébourg offers something many resort areas lack: a lived-in Mauritian town with a market, small restaurants and a waterfront where local life carries on. It is a good base for travellers who prefer guesthouses and local character over resort complexes.
Its location also makes it useful at the start or end of a trip, avoiding a long cross-island transfer on arrival or before a flight.
History and the bay of Grand Port
The bay of Grand Port was the scene of the Battle of Grand Port in 1810, a naval engagement between French and British forces, shortly before the British took control of the island. The French victory here is commemorated in Mahébourg, and the area also holds the remains of early Dutch settlement at Vieux Grand Port to the north.
The National History Museum is housed in a colonial-era building in Mahébourg. It has been the subject of restoration work, so check its current opening status before planning a visit.
Île aux Aigrettes
Île aux Aigrettes, a small coral island just off the coast, is a nature reserve managed for the restoration of native coastal forest and the protection of endemic species. Visits are by guided tour, arranged through the reserve’s managers; check current arrangements before you go.
The waterfront and market
The promenade along the bay is the town’s social centre, particularly in the late afternoon. The market brings vendors from across the south-east; ask locally for the current market days. Small restaurants and street-food stalls are scattered through the centre.
Getting there and around
The airport at Plaine Magnien is a short drive away, so arrival and departure are straightforward by taxi or transfer. Buses connect Mahébourg with Curepipe, Port Louis and the south-east villages.
The town centre is walkable. A hire car or taxis make it easy to reach Blue Bay, the south coast and the east coast.
Best time to visit
The south-east is warm year-round. In the cooler months the south-east trade winds blow most strongly here, which keeps the air fresh but can make the bay choppy. The summer months are hotter and more humid and include the cyclone season.
How long to stay
Two to four nights is a good stay, either at the start or end of a trip or as a base for the south-east. Combine it with Blue Bay for beach time.
