Pereybère is a small seaside village on the coast road just north of Grand Baie. Its focus is a compact public beach in a sheltered cove, with shallow, generally calm water inside the reef and a string of food stalls, cafés and small restaurants across the road.

It has become a popular alternative to Grand Baie for travellers who want a beach they can walk to and a more relaxed atmosphere, without giving up easy access to shops and restaurants. Accommodation here leans towards apartments, villas and smaller hotels rather than large resorts.

Why visit Pereybère

Pereybère gives you a proper swimming beach within walking distance of where you sleep, plus enough places to eat that you do not need a car every evening. For many visitors that combination is exactly what Grand Baie lacks.

It is not secluded. The beach is popular with both visitors and Mauritians, especially at weekends and in school holidays, and the coast road runs right behind it. Arrive early in the day if you want space on the sand.

The beach and the lagoon

The public beach curves around a small bay protected by the reef, which keeps the water calm in most conditions. The shallows suit families, and snorkellers explore the rocky edges of the cove. Trees at the back of the beach give some shade.

Swim safely: there is no guarantee of lifeguard cover on public beaches. Stay within the lagoon, keep away from boat channels and follow any flags or local advice, particularly when the wind picks up.

Staying in Pereybère

The village is mostly residential, and many visitors rent an apartment or villa within a short walk of the beach. That makes Pereybère a good fit for longer stays, families and travellers who like to cook some of their own meals. Supermarkets and the restaurants of Grand Baie are close by.

Rooms facing the coast road can pick up traffic noise; properties a street or two back are quieter.

Getting there and around

Follow the motorway north through Port Louis and the coast road beyond Grand Baie. From the airport in the south-east this is a cross-island journey, so a pre-booked transfer or taxi is simplest on arrival day.

Buses run along the coast road between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux. Many visitors walk or take a short taxi ride into Grand Baie, and hire a car for days out.

Best time to visit

The cooler, drier months from about May to October are comfortable for beach days, and the north coast is relatively sheltered from the winter trade winds. Summer (about November to April) is hotter and more humid and includes the cyclone season.

Weekends and Mauritian school holidays bring more local visitors to the beach.

How long to stay

Three to five nights is enough to enjoy the beach and explore the north. Pereybère also works as the main base for a week-long, unhurried trip, with day trips to Port Louis, Pamplemousses and the west coast.
