On Mauritius the coast you stay on matters more than almost anything else. Distances are short, but the north, east, south-east, south and west have different beaches, winds and atmospheres, and a base that suits one kind of trip can be awkward for another.
Mauritius Travel Guide is an independent editorial guide, not a booking engine. Our accommodation catalogue will list properties that have an exact, current listing on an established booking platform, and our where-to-stay guides explain the areas before you look at individual places to stay.

How to choose a base
- Decide on the coast first. Sheltered west and north for calm water and sunsets; east for long resort beaches; south-east for airport convenience; south for quiet; plateau and Port Louis for city life.
- Decide how much you want to walk out. Grand Baie, Pereybère and Flic en Flac let you walk to restaurants; much of the east, south and south-west is resort- or car-based.
- Split longer trips. A week or more often works best across two contrasting bases, with Rodrigues as a separate stay.

Types of accommodation you will meet
Mauritius has everything from large beach resorts to small family-run guesthouses, self-catering apartments and villas. Resorts dominate the east coast and parts of the north-west and south-west; apartments and guesthouses are common in Grand Baie, Pereybère, Flic en Flac and Mahébourg. On Rodrigues, small guesthouses, many offering home-cooked meals, are the norm.
Practical notes
Check what is included in a rate, whether a property is on the beach or across a road, and how far it is from the airport. Transfers from the airport to the North Coast or the south-west cross most of the island.
