How the region is laid out
Port Mathurin is the main town on the north coast, with Anse aux Anglais just to its east. The east coast has the island’s best-known beaches around Pointe Coton, Saint François and Trou d’Argent. The south-east faces the widest part of the lagoon around Mourouk and Port Sud-Est. The airport is at Plaine Corail in the south-west.
Port Mathurin
The island’s small capital and harbour on the north coast, with its market, services and nearby Anse aux Anglais.
It works if you want services, transport and places to eat close by, and plan to explore the whole island.
It works less well if you want a beach outside your door; consider Anse aux Anglais or the east coast.

Pointe Coton & East Coast
Beaches on the east coast including Pointe Coton, Saint François and Trou d’Argent, linked by coastal walking paths.
It works if you want beaches and coastal walks on your doorstep.
It works less well if you want to be near the market and services of Port Mathurin.
Mourouk & South
The south-east coast facing Rodrigues’s widest lagoon, around Mourouk and Port Sud-Est.
It works if you want the lagoon, boat trips and kitesurfing in the south-east.
It works less well if you want to be near the town; this is a quieter, more remote area.
Do you need a car?
Taxis and local buses connect the villages, and hire cars are available. Many guesthouses can arrange transport. Roads are narrow and hilly.
