Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a large beach resort on the Le Morne peninsula at the south-west tip of Mauritius, with the lagoon on one side, its own 18-hole championship golf course on the other and the basalt mass of Le Morne Brabant behind it. Guests remember the setting first: every room faces the Indian Ocean, and the mountain fills the view inland.

Best for

Families who want a kids’ club, pools and plenty of included activities; golfers who want to play a full course without leaving the resort; couples and groups who like water sports, a spa and a choice of restaurants in one place; and travellers who want to be close to Le Morne, Chamarel and the south-west coast.

It is not a small or secluded boutique hotel, and it is not a base for exploring the north of the island or Port Louis. If you want independent restaurants and nightlife within walking distance, Grand Baie or Flic en Flac will suit you better.

Location

The resort is on the Le Morne peninsula, with the postal address Le Morne Peninsula, 91202 Le Morne. Its supplier coordinates put it about 1.3 km north of Le Morne Brabant in a straight line, close to the Le Morne Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site. The sister resort, Dinarobin Beachcomber, is next door, about five minutes’ walk away according to the property. In a straight line, La Gaulette village is about 4 km away and Chamarel about 7.5 km, but the road route round the coast is longer.

Rooms and style at Paradis Beachcomber

The property describes its rooms and suites as decorated in natural, cool tones, each with a private bathroom, a flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi. Every room faces the sea from a private furnished balcony or terrace, and some are directly on the beach. Beachcomber also lists 13 private villas within the resort. Room categories differ mainly in size, outlook and distance from the beach, so check exactly which category and building you are booking rather than assuming a beachfront room.

Facilities at Paradis Beachcomber

The resort has its own 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course and golf academy, a Beachcomber spa, tennis courts, beach volleyball and a kids’ club for children aged 3 to 11 with its own pool and a baby care room.

On site there are four restaurants: Le Brabant for themed buffets, La Palma for Italian food, Blue Marlin for seafood and La Ravanne for Creole cooking. Guests can also use the restaurants and facilities at Dinarobin next door, which brings the choice to eight restaurants. Water skiing, snorkelling and windsurfing are offered, diving can be arranged, and a pool is heated in winter depending on the temperature. In short, it is designed so that you never need to leave unless you want to.

Who should consider Paradis Beachcomber

Consider it if your trip is built around a resort stay rather than touring: a week or more of beach, sport and family time, with occasional excursions to Chamarel, the Black River Gorges or a dolphin-watching trip. It also makes sense for golfers, for families who will use the kids’ club, and for anyone who wants Le Morne’s landscape on the doorstep. It suits a self-drive itinerary less well, because almost everything else on the island is a long drive away.

Trade-offs, honestly

No property suits every trip, and Paradis Beachcomber is a better fit for some than others. These are the points worth weighing before you book.

Price positioning. This is a luxury resort, and pricing sits at the upper end of the island’s resort market. Meal plans make a big difference to the total, so compare half-board, full-board and the optional all-inclusive package rather than the room rate alone.

Scale. With a golf course, several restaurants and a shared campus with Dinarobin, it is a big operation. Expect a lively resort atmosphere, especially in school holidays, rather than a quiet hideaway.

Distance. Le Morne is at the far south-west corner of the island. Port Louis is about 36 km away in a straight line and the main airport about 38 km, and the roads round the coast are slower than those figures suggest.

Wind and weather. The lagoon off Le Morne is known for wind sports, which is good news for kitesurfers and windsurfers. On breezy days in the cooler months, sunbathers may prefer a sheltered spot.

Evenings out. There is little independent nightlife on the peninsula, so most evenings are spent at the resort or at Dinarobin.

Getting there and getting around

The property gives the drive from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport as roughly 55 km by road; in a straight line it is about 38 km. Most guests arrive by pre-booked road transfer, and the resort also offers helicopter transfers and sightseeing flights at an extra cost. You do not need a car for a resort-based stay, but you will want a hire car, a taxi or an organised excursion for Chamarel, the Black River Gorges National Park, Tamarin or the west-coast attractions, which the property puts within roughly half an hour’s drive.

How Paradis Beachcomber compares

Compared with staying in Flic en Flac or Tamarin, Paradis trades walkable restaurants and village life for a complete resort with golf and a more dramatic setting. Compared with the big East Coast resorts around Belle Mare, it offers the Le Morne landscape and drier west-coast weather, but longer transfers. Compared with a self-catering villa in La Gaulette, it costs more and offers far more facilities, but less independence.

Practical notes for a stay at Paradis Beachcomber

Le Morne Brabant can be climbed, but the route is steep in places and best tackled early in the day; our Le Morne guide explains the practicalities. The mountain and its slopes are protected as a World Heritage cultural landscape, remembered as a refuge for people who escaped slavery, so treat it as a place of memory as well as a viewpoint.

The lagoon off the peninsula is popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers when the wind is up. If calm water matters to you, ask the resort which part of the beach is usually most sheltered.

Beachcomber lets guests dine at its other hotels, with a supplement at some, and offers the option of moving to another Beachcomber property during a stay. Both can add variety to a long holiday, but check the conditions when you book.
